How IoT Companies Can Make Their Products More Secure

Amid recent hacks, IoT companies are under more pressure than ever to make their products more secure.

After last month’s distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, the security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is facing more scrutiny than ever.

Whenever a hacking occurs, the solution most often thrown around is “change your password”. However, in this day and age, a single password is not enough.

Unfortunately when it comes to IoT devices, consumers are handcuffed. They either do not know how to change their device passwords or it is simply not possible.

This means it is up to the IoT companies to make their devices more secure.

Securing Your IoT Device

Inc. recently spoke with several experts and here’s what they had to say:

  1. Mandatory password change – Last month’s cyberattack occured when devices using a default username and password were taken over to form a massive connected network. This can be prevented if companies made it mandatory to change the default password the first time a device is used.
  2. Easier updates – Companies should make device updates as seamless as possible by applying patches automatically without any action required by the user.
  3. Build cybersecurity into home network routers – Luma CEO and co-founder Paul Judge says ““Cybersecurity must be built into the home network routers directly because IoT devices are vulnerable and users do not have the time to be the CISO [chief information security officer] of their home.”
  4. Servicing of device – Companies need to update and support their devices throughout their whole lifecycle. Many companies neglect their devices after deployment, as proven by recent attacks.
