SALT LAKE CITY – A family here has won a home security system from NorthStar Alarm, which will help the household closely monitor a child with autism spectrum disorder.
The family won the alarm system after participating in an essay contest held by NorthStar, in partnership with the Autism Resources of Utah County Council, Deseret News reports.

A year ago, the family learned that their three-year-old son, Ben, had an autism spectrum disorder, and was constantly wandering off. Research published by the journal Pediatrics found that half of kids on the autism spectrum wander off.
By winning the essay contest, the family has received a security system, which includes a door sensor on Ben’s door to let the family know when he’s coming in and out. Additionally, NorthStar installed a touchscreen panel on a wall near the front door, as well as a smart lock on the front door to alert the family when visitors come in and out.
The system will send notifications to the family’s phones, and the panel will beep when a door has been opened.
NorthStar Alarm announced the winners of the free system at the Utah Valley University Conference on Autism, where they also presented two other families with giant checks.
