SENSORMATIC TO PROVIDE CCTV SYSTEM IN JOHANNESBURG AREA
BOCA RATON, Fla.
Sensormatic Electronics Corp. has been selected to install and maintain an extensive video surveillance system in the Central Business District of Johannesburg, South Africa, by the private sector initiative Business Against Crime and in collaboration with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The contract is estimated at $6.8 million and will be overseen by DNA Sensormatic, an independent dealer for the company.
In the first phase of the roll-out, 55 of the company’s video surveillance cameras will be added by the summer to the city’s existing CCTV network. The total number of cameras will reach 300 when the system is fully operational by the end of 2001.
The decision to add more cameras was based on the testing of a 15-camera pilot project, under way since April 2000. Richard Pople, CEO of DNA Sensormatic, says the new control center is a much-needed resource in the city’s battle against crime. “The ultimate goal is to enable the South African Police Services and the Metropolitan Police force to have a response time of less than 60 seconds to any incident in the inner city,” he says.
Sensormatic is a supplier of electronic security solutions to the retail, commercial and industrial marketplace.
