Eaton Launches Intelligent Modular Access Control System for IT Rack Enclosures

TANlock by Eaton enables data center and IT managers to remotely manage and control physical access to server racks and enclosures from a single dashboard.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Power management company Eaton announces an intelligent, modular access control system for information technology (IT) rack enclosures with the North American launch of TANlock by Eaton.

Supporting Eaton’s continuing focus on the critical importance of cybersecurity, this smart lock enables data center and IT managers to remotely manage and control physical access to an unlimited number of server racks and enclosures, all from a single dashboard, according to the company.

Leveraging technology from leading lock manufacturer FATH Mechatronics, TANlock by Eaton integrates with Eaton’s Visual Power Manager (VPM) and Visual Capacity Optimization Manager (VCOM) software solutions to give managers greater control of — and visibility into — user access to critical infrastructure.

“The growth of Cloud computing and Internet of Things connectivity have created more entry points to access businesses’ private data than ever before,” says Jeff Kennedy, product manager, Eaton. “As companies prioritize cybersecurity measures in the connected technologies they deploy, it is essential to also incorporate physical security as part of a comprehensive strategy to protect critical data. With TANlock by Eaton, we are giving data center and IT managers an intelligent way to remotely manage and control user access to infrastructure, providing peace of mind that IT equipment is protected within the enclosure.”

From large enterprises to small businesses, Eaton says more companies are shifting critical infrastructure to edge computing environments and other locations where on-site support staff may not be present. With more essential data being transitioned to these environments, operators need greater visibility and control over who can access and manage critical equipment.

TANlock by Eaton is said to add intelligent, physical security to Eaton’s growing portfolio of secure power management solutions, giving data center and IT professionals an added layer of security to help protect critical data from unauthorized user access.

The solution incorporates built-in intelligence to deliver versatile access control with seven different authentication technologies to meet a wide variety of requirements. Through integration with Eaton’s VPM and VCOM software, users can see and control both the state of rack power infrastructure as well as who is accessing it.

Eaton says it continues to deliver innovative technologies that enable users to take a system-wide approach to cybersecurity, recently becoming the first power management company in the industry to have UPS connectivity devices certified to meet both the UL 2900-1 and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62443-4-2 cybersecurity standards, for its Gigabit Network Card and Industrial Gateway Card.
