Heroes of the Industry

In an instant someone’s life, well-being and property could be at risk. Those in this industry are all too familiar with the dangers associated with fires, crime and illness. That is why security professionals across the nation work diligently to make sure their communities are protected and safe.

Occasionally, true heroism is called into action. With the quick thinking of operators, the diligence of local police, firefighters and emergency medical services, and the promise of a properly designed security or fire alarm system, lives and valuables are saved.

Typically, mainstream media reports focus on deceitful sales techniques, faulty fire and security systems, lawsuits and the devastation left after a tragic incident. But those who truly deserve recognition are the ones who rise above the challenges. They are the ones who are prepared to respond when a situation arises. When someone is in great peril, the heroes of the security industry step up and take control.

“These everyday acts of bravery and compassion are rarely reported in the media, but are often the most appreciated by our customers,” says Kelby Hagar, president of Dallas-based Westec Intelligent Surveillance. Westec’s command center watches over 5,000 locations with thousands of employees and customers across the country. With the use of its voice-down capability, the company’s operators have the ability to diffuse potentially life-threatening situations and get customers out of harm’s way.

A new SECURITY SALES & INTEGRATION survey shows that when security contractors were asked if they were aware of their system installations saving property or lives, 60 percent answered “yes.” Nearly three in four (70 percent) cited intrusion systems in those instances.

SSI searched for some of the most compelling real-life stories that convey the heroic efforts of the electronic security industry. Whether it is a video surveillance system, intrusion system or personal emergency response device, these dramatic stories demonstrate the success in protecting homes, property and, ultimately, people’s lives.
