Senate Passes Controversial Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act
Bill allows for companies and the government to share information that aims to neutralize hacking threats.

The controversial Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA) was passed by the Senate on Tuesday which will enable companies and the government to share information regarding hacking threats.
NBC News reports the bill passed by a 74-21 vote despite major technology companies — Apple and Yelp, namely — and senators having concerns about privacy and transparency.

The bill’s backers say CISA will make it easier for corporations to share information about cyberattacks with each other or the government without the fear of lawsuits, according to the report.
The Senate rejected all amendments to the bill, namely one that would have addressed concerns about companies giving customers’ personal information to the government.
“This bill will provide important liability protections for companies that choose to exchange cybersecurity threat information,” said Paul Kurtz, CEO of TruSTAR Technology and former cybersecurity adviser to the Clinton and Bush administrations. “However, we have also heard the message loud and clear that information-sharing efforts must not cost us our privacy. Now that government has played its role by removing legal obstacles to cyber incident collarboration, it is time for industry to work together to create a privacy-preserving information sharing infrastructure.”
