ECV Credited for 30% Reduction in Palm Beach False Alarms
Palm Beach County has shown a significant reduction in false dispatches following the instatement of a Florida law governing burglar alarm response. The law calls for state dispatchers to use Enhanced Call Verification (ECV), the practice of calling two phone numbers before dispatching police to an alarm. When implemented on July 1 of last year, Florida became one of the first states in the country to require such a practice. As a result, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department reduced its dispatches from 12,712 between October-December 2005 to 8,802 during the same time frame in 2006.
Sheriff’s Department officials estimate approximately 80 percent of the improvement can be attributed to ECV, which was passed along with other dispatch reduction methods.
With numbers just beginning to become available from across the state, the Alarm Association of Florida (AAF) claims nearly every county appears to have made positive progress.
The proliferation of cell phones is credited as a major proponent for law enforcement agencies across the county to implement ECV, according to the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC).
