Is Verizon Re-Entering Home Automation Market?
Or maybe it’s just a change of plan. Either way, the company appears to be eager to get back into the game with the power of FiOS and Zigbee.
According to Zatz Not Funny (via FierceCable), there are FCC documents floating around that show Verizon working on the FiOS Quantum Gateway (model number FiOS-G1100), which will support Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Z-Wave. Talk about covering all of the bases!
Despite all of those third-party device options, the company is also working with GreenWave Reality on its own Zigbee module to be used in conjunction with the FiOS gateway. GreenWave may sound familiar for their work on the Connected by TCP lighting system being sold at Home Depot. Then at January’s CES, the company was creating buzz with its Home2Cloud platform, which includes connected energy, lighting and security options.
There’s no word on when the service will get launched (or even announced). However, GreenWave has asked the FCC to keep a lid on photos and the user manual of the gateway until June 30 “in order to ensure sensitive business information remains confidential until the actual marketing of the device.”
