The fourth annual Security Solutions Awards program — spotlighting applications in access control, fire/life safety, intrusion detection, monitoring, video surveillance and more — salutes security product deployments.

10 Field-Proven Brands Win SSI Security Solutions Awards at GSX

LAS VEGAS – Security Sales & Integration has announced the winners of its 4th Annual Security Solutions Awards program during the Global Security Exchange (GSX, formerly ASIS Int’l Annual Seminar and Exhibits).

The program, which distinguishes those manufacturers and vendors whose electronic security solutions have been proven in the field to meet security, safety or other organizational needs for end users, named winners in seven categories.

The 2018 Security Solutions Awards winners are:

  • ASSA ABLOY
  • IDIS
  • Milestone Systems
  • Openpath
  • Optex
  • Paige Datacom Solutions
  • Seagate Technology
  • SnapAV
  • Telguard
  • V5 Systems

“The real test for manufacturers’ products ― especially when dealing in the sometimes life or death realm of security and safety ― is how they truly meet the needs of both the security integrator and their customer,” says SSI Editor-in-Chief and Associate Publisher Scott Goldfine. “How does a given device or system deliver problem-solution results in the field deployed in real-world scenarios? That is the true litmus test and why SSI founded the Security Solutions Awards. This unique program is an outstanding platform for security product suppliers to showcase their wares and a unique source for integrators to identify project solutions.”

Each submitted solution entrant was judged by a panel of experienced independent security industry professional integrators and consultants. They evaluated not only on the technical merits and ease of installation of the product or technology solution but also the ability of it to help integrators meet project bid, specification or design parameters; satisfy regulatory, compliance or code requirements; and deliver the highest level of system capabilities, features, functionality, user-friendliness, results and client satisfaction across the full range of general, niche and vertical market applications.

All submitted project applications had to be installed or deployed in the past 18 months to be considered for the program. Both winners and other entrants will be profiled in SSI’s annual December Technology Issue, and spotlighted online and through other electronic media. Here is a closer look at each winning entry:

Access Control

Commerce Tower on Main, in Kansas City, Mo., was constructed with the goal of redefining downtown apartment living. The luxury project was a renovation of a historic site, which required care in preserving the building’s historic character while also ensuring the space was energy efficient and built with sustainable materials. Those goals led to installation of the ASSA ABLOY’s SARGENT IN120 WiFi access control lock.

Openpath worked with Wonder, a new mobile entertainment and gaming company, to implement a more secure office access system at its state-of-the-art HQ in Los Angeles. With offices across the country, Wonder needed a system that would enable employees to easily enter workspaces at any time, even if it wasn’t their home office.

Home Controls

Customers with a monitored security system and the Telguard FlexHub Z-Wave Controller can simplify their lives by adding Z-Wave-enabled devices such as lights, locks, thermostats, garage door openers and more. The devices can be controlled through the security system app on the user’s mobile device. The dealer gains a happier customer by solving the “how” part of the customer’s automation equation.

Intrusion Detection

The UL-Listed RLS-2020 REDSCAN Mini Laser Detector by Optex was selected for a national retail banking franchise that aimed to prevent intruders from cutting holes in roofs during business hours while the security systems deactivated. Because rooftop environments can be harsh and susceptible to nuisance alarms from falling leaves, birds, weather and other perimeter obstacles, the detection settings were made to detect objects from 12” and higher to help eliminate these false alarms.

Misc. Security Products

ComNet Communications has started a project to wire a massive 784,000-square-foot facility, including 457,000-square-feet of production space. The project will include 28 access control panels, numerous PoE+ devices and a large number of video cameras (one room alone will have 115 cameras). Paige Datacom Solutions‘ GameChanger Cable, a new cable designed to significantly exceed the reach of traditional category cable, is being used to achieve project goals and requirements.

Security Monitoring

In California, detectives from a Bay Area police department were tasked with investigating a spate of drive-by shootings. Even after 10 shootings, not a single witness was able to identify the shooter or his vehicle. That changed when the police department deployed V5 acoustic gunshot sensors with video — wireless, portable, self-powered devices that detect and localize any source of gunfire, as well as providing HD video. The shooter was ultimately apprehended after a V5 unit took an image of the suspect’s vehicle, and the gunshot localization capability captured the actual drive-by shooting as an audio clip.

Specialty Category

At more than 21,000-square-feet, the $95million Mesa Arts Center in Arizona is one of the largest and most complicated community gathering spaces in the region, hosting events, classes, performances and outdoor weekend festivals. While customary security approaches rely heavily on video surveillance and security guards, the size and complexity of the campus soon made the traditional deployment of manned guarding and complex surveillance monitoring cost prohibitive, and coverage potentially inadequate. These challenges were resolved through an innovative virtual guarding solution anchored by IDIS Solution Suite.

Video Surveillance

The Canyons School District in Salt Lake County, Utah, serves about 33,900 students in 44 schools. Covering 192 square miles, Canyons relies on a well-coordinated bus system, transporting 15,000 students daily on bus routes covering almost 1.5 million miles a year. For the buses, a team specified a mobile video system built on the Milestone Systems open platform, video management software (VMS), integrated with multiple, on-board 360° cameras from Axis Communications and a mobile recording server.

Located in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a large, high-end hotel needed a security surveillance system upgrade. As it is a downtown focal point and popular tourist destination, there is a high need for crime deterrence. One of the key challenges the hotel experienced when trying to resolve crime incidents was that its surveillance storage drives would fail, leaving security personnel unable to retrieve footage for police reports. To meet its end customer’s needs, an integrator utilized Seagate Technology SkyHawk drives to improve surveillance efficiency.

A national automotive car dealership chain had a rash of car break-ins, partially aided by a porous perimeter and varying schedules between their service and retail centers. The dealership needed to secure their property and inventory, while still allowing customers to conveniently car shop. The end user and an integrator had tried multiple technologies, including perimeter detection, video verification, and other analytics. They finally found their answer with the Visualint solution by SnapAV.
