PowerShades to Provide PoE Shades for Experimental ‘Living Lab’ Home

PowerShades’ PoE automated shades, called TRUEPoE, offer benefits found in the company’s RF automated product, among other advantages.

JOPLIN, Mo. — PowerShades, a provider of manual and automated window shades for residential, commercial and hospitality applications, announces the company is partnering with Specialty Publishing Media’s Living Lab to provide the experimental home with its Power over Ethernet (PoE) automated shades.

“From The Ground Up: Project Sustainability Living Lab” will incorporate some of the most advanced products and systems from leading manufacturers and technology companies from across the globe, according to the announcement.

Located in Columbia, S.C., Living Lab is said to give consumers, builders, trades, industry, academia and government an inside look through the entire process of building a sustainable home. Every aspect of the build will be featured, from concept to completion.

“We’ve long touted the eco-friendly aspects and reduced energy consumption of our customizable, automated PoE shades,” says PowerShades President Ryan Chacon. “We can’t wait to join the other Living Lab project technology innovators in exploring the possibilities inherent to this project’s model for sustainable living and providing firsthand guidance on how to produce a real-world sustainable home.”

PowerShades’ PoE automated shades, called TRUEPoE, are said to offer all the benefits of the company’s RF automated product, along with additional advantages not found in other types of motorized shades. With PoE automated shades, a single CAT5 cable provides both power and communications, so there is no proprietary hard wiring necessary.

Because the PoE motor is low voltage (50 VDC/VAC) it does not require a licensed electrician. And with power coming from a single, central source, more information can be transferred on the network cable while improving reliability over traditional RF solutions.

Says Peggy Smedley, a technology expert who is overseeing the Living Lab, “Project Sustainability Living Lab will demonstrate and educate how to create a sustainable, clean and green future for all homes and communities in which we live, thrive and prosper. It is an impressive collaborative project that is designed to build as much trust, awareness and education into the future of what a sustainable home can and should be for a community on this planet.

“The success of this construction project hinges on the participation and collaboration of our suppliers, and we are extremely grateful to companies like PowerShades who have chosen to get involved.”
