Mission 500 Seeks Volunteers for Appalachian Security Industry Service Trip

The annual event aims to raise $10,000 to provide needy families with fire-safety equipment including smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and more.

MIAMI — Mission 500 is organizing a group of security industry professionals to pack up and head for the hills as the charitable organization makes plans for the 3rd Annual Appalachian Security Industry Service Trip.

This year’s outing is scheduled for Oct. 18-22 where volunteers will work with local stakeholders in Philippi, W. Va., to help families in need.

“We are excited about the success of the Appalachian Service Trips and how it brings together the growing community of security industry professionals who care about helping others,” says Jeff Eichenlaub, director of strategic partnerships for Mission 500. “More importantly though, together we are working to make a difference in the lives of low income families in Appalachia where 41.5% of residents fall below the poverty line.”

This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 in order to provide 65 families with fire-safety equipment including smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, fire extinguishers and a safety training plan. Most families in this region do not have access to or knowledge of the importance of these tools, according to Mission 500. Every $150 donated will cover the cost of the fire-safety equipment for one family. Volunteers will also be working to provide warm and safe housing for families in severe need.

The cost for the five-day trip is $395 and volunteers will be provided with lodging and meals. Registration deadline is Sept 1; there is no limit on the number of volunteers accepted. Last year, representatives from Axis, Bosch, Pelco by Schneider Electric and Reed Exhibitions participated in a trailer home makeover that provided a safer and warmer space for a young Appalachian family.
