Shooter Detection Systems Names New President, Chief Technology Officer

ROWLEY, Mass. – Gunshot detection solutions platform Shooter Detection Systems (SDS), an Alarm.com company, has appointed Stephen Carney as the company’s new president and promoted former managing director Rich Onofrio as the new chief technology officer.

Carney previously served as vice president of global product management for HID Global. He brings more than 15 years of experience in the physical security industry to SDS. Prior to his work at HID Global, he oversaw product management and marketing for the world’s largest access control supplier, the Physical Access Control Solutions Business Area (PACS) at HID.

He also held the position of senior director for video surveillance, integration solutions and cybersecurity at Tyco Security Products and Johnson Controls, spending 10 years specializing in video surveillance. Before his physical security career, Carney served as a product manager in the lotery industry and as a trial atorney.

A member of the Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island bars, he specialized in complex commercial litigation and construction law. Carney graduated cum laude from Pace University School of Law and began his career as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, completing two combat tours in the Middle East as a platoon leader and Patriot Missile operator.

“Joining a company with such an essential mission and leading a team of passionate, caring and talented individuals is extremely meaningful to me,” says Carney in the company announcement. “I’m excited to help the company and our partners expand their gunshot detection products and services portfolio and, most importantly, make a difference with this life-saving technology.”

Meanwhile, Onofrio will lead the engineering team and oversee product development following the retirement of Ronald Fowler, the company’s original CTO. Onofrio previously served as SDS’ managing director for two years and as its vice president of hardware engineering after joining SDS as one of its original employees in 2014.

Fowler and Onofrio have jointly authored 10 gunshot detection patents and have worked together on the Boomerang Shooter Detection System development team during their time at Raytheon.

“My career has been centered on gunshot detection development for over 14 years,” said Onofrio in the company announcement. “My role as managing director provided an invaluable opportunity to grasp how the front end of the business operates.

“I look forward to applying the insights I gained over the past two years to my new role as CTO and I’m excited to rejoin the day-to-day operations of the engineering team,” he said.
