Arlo Smart Security Cameras Equipped to Remotely Call 911

Netgear says its family of Arlo security cameras are among the first in the smart home marketplace to provide 911 notifications.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Netgear (NASDAQ: NTGR) is releasing new service plans for its portfolio of Arlo security cameras that utilize algorithms and analytics to remotely call 911, perform person detection, among other new feature sets.

The new service plans extend the availability of video recordings up to 60 days and gives users the capability to alert local first responders via 911 emergency call service from any location — a feature among the first to do so in the smart home marketplace, according to Netgear.

“Arlo cameras are already packed with innovative technologies, but the more intelligence we integrate through AI analytics, the more convenience the system offers to our users,” says Pat Collins, senior vice president, Arlo products, Netgear.

There are three primary aspects to the Arlo Smart portfolio. First, by using advanced algorithms, person detection is designed to reduce the number false positive notifications, such as those caused everyday movements like trees swaying in the wind, according to an announcement.

Cloud activity zones on Arlo cameras will let users define motion zones and further cut down on false positive notifications. Users will be able to program the wireless cameras to only send person detection alerts and limit it to areas such as a front door.

The rich notifications feature enables users to view images and video on the smartphone lock screen, see live footage from the cameras, and sound an alarm without having to open the app.

The service plans are compatible with every Arlo camera and start at $2.99 per camera per month, or $9.99 per month for up to 10 cameras. Existing subscribers of the Premier and Elite service plans will automatically be transferred to the Arlo Smart Premier plan and Arlo Smart Elite plan, respectively.

In order to enable customers to experience the new features for themselves, a one-month free trial of the Arlo Smart Premier plan will be offered to new subscribers.

Here is a breakdown of the service plans:

Arlo Smart — $2.99 per month per camera. All cameras come with an included Basic plan offering access to motion-and audio-triggered recordings from the past seven days, for up to five cameras. Users can add on smart features such as person detection, Cloud activity zones and rich notifications on a per camera basis for a small monthly fee. Does not include e911 emergency call service.

Arlo Smart Premier — $9.99 per month. The plan offers Arlo Smart features for up to 10 cameras and extends Cloud recordings for 30 days. Customers will also get access to e911 emergency call service.

Arlo Smart Elite — $14.99 per month. The plan offers the same smart features and e911 emergency call service (U.S. customers only) as the Arlo Smart Premier plan, but with up to 60 days of Cloud recordings for up to 20 cameras.
