New Startup Offers DIY Security System With Pro Monitoring
Cove says its DIY security system is an affordable solution with the combined benefits of professional and DIY systems, and “none of the drawbacks.”
DRAPER, Utah — The latest entrant in the battle for DIY smart security supremacy is a startup based here called Cove.
Cove offers a customizable DIY home security system with professional monitoring starting at $15 a month — no contract required.
“We’re changing the way home security is done. In an increasingly dangerous world, we have made it easier than ever for homeowners and renters to protect their family and property. In surveying consumers, we discovered why they are unhappy with their current security provider, or why they lack a security system altogether. Consumers with professional systems are tired of being offered outdated technology, expensive, long-term contracts and complicated systems that require professional technicians for installation and repair. DIY consumers want systems to be higher quality, easier to install, more effective, and to have the benefits of professional monitoring. For those without a security system, price often serves as a significant barrier,” says Robert Shelley, president of Cove. “We built Cove on the idea that we can offer every consumer exactly what they want: an affordable solution with the combined benefits of professional and DIY systems with none of the drawbacks.”

Interested end-users can visit Cove’s website and click on ‘Build my system’ to begin the customization process right away. After clicking the button, the visitors are presented with the following questions:

What type of property is the system for?

What services are important to you? (Options given include: Burglar/intrusion protection, carbon monoxide monitoring, smoke/fire monitoring, medical alert monitoring, flood/frozen pipe monitoring and smartphone control)

How many exterior doors do you have?

Do you have an indoor pet that weighs over 40 lbs?
- How many people have a key to your home?
After specifying requirements, Cove will create a smart security system package based on the submitted answers.
Components available include a touchscreen control panel, door sensor, window sensor, motion sensor, key remote, glass break detector, smoke detector, CO detector, flood sensor and medical alert button, as well as a yard sign and window sticker.
Cove offers several payment options. The “Pay Never or Later” option is $0 upfront for equipment (up to $500) and $25 or $35 per month for professional monitoring. If you monitor with Cove for 36 months, the equipment is free (Pay Never).
The “Pay Now” option allows customers to pay for equipment upfront and save $10 per month on professional monitoring.
Not only does Cove face competition from traditional security companies, but there’s also a number of major DIY security companies that also feature professional monitoring — Samsung; Ring (Amazon); SimpliSafe; Nest.
Unlike some of its competitors, Cove doesn’t seem to offer any type of video surveillance solutions or third-party smart home integrations.
However, the company claims to have the highest percentage of 5-star ratings of any national home security company. Might it actually be able to take on the major players of the industry?
